Complete tour of “Francis Way”, Rieti’s “Holy Valley” and Terminillo mountain.

Every day you’ll walk a different leg on Saint Francis walk with our guide.

A shuttle will take you to and from your accommodation from the starting and arriving point of each leg.

You can choose between walking the whole leg or just part of it (length will be indicated for each leg) and use shuttle transport to your accommodation.

DAY 1 Arrival in Rieti with self-transport and check in chosen accommodation. Welcome briefing about Francis Walk

DAY 2-6 Hiking “St Francis Walk” in 5 legs with our guide. Shuttle car to take participants to the starting point and back

  1. ST. FRANCIS BEECH-TREE. Eligible starting points: PIEDILUCO (altitude 370m asl), LABRO (600m) or MORRO REATINO (740m) to POGGIO BUSTONE; climb the trail into the mountain up to the “St Francis Beech-tree” (1100m). Along the way down, walk past the shepherds’ village of Cepparo (850m) and through the woods covering the sides of Mount Rosato and arrive at the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (815m). According to the chosen starting point, the length of this leg is: from Piediluco 21 Km; from Labro 17 Km; from Morro Reatino 13 Km.
  2. POGGIO BUSTONE-RIETI. Start from the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (altitude 815m asl) towards village below, down along the woods on the mountain side passing through the little village of San Liberato (560m) and then Cantalice (680m), an ancient village with magnificient buildings clinging to the steep rocky mountainside. Proceeding then further down to the Sanctuary of San Felice all’Acqua (580m) and the Acquamartina brook (450m) and up again to La Foresta (Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Foresta) (510m) and on to Rieti (405m). Distance: from Poggio Bustone to La Foresta 11 Km; from La Foresta to Rieti 6 Km for a total of 17 km.In addition it’s also possible to visit the chapel of Sanctuary “Sacro Speco” (1000) at the beginning of the leg: from the Sanctuary of Poggio Bustone (altitude 815m asl) we hike into the mountain above to visit the “Sacro Speco”, a little stone chapel built by the cave where St Francis withdrew in meditation and penitence and then back to the Sanctuary for a total length of 3 Km;
  3. RIETI-GRECCIO. Start from the Cathedral of Rieti (altitude 405m asl). As we walk out of the city we pass along the banks of River Velino, with its crystal-clear water. Then up through magnificent woods to the Sanctuary of Fonte Colombo (540m). Walking up and down over the Monti Sabini, passing by Sant’Elia (700m) and Contigliano (450m), the Abbey of San Pastore (500m) we reach the village of Greccio (700m). Distance to Greccio: from the Cathedral of Rieti 21 Km, from Fonte Colombo 15 Km.
  4. THE “CAPPELLETTA”. From the village of Greccio (altitude 700m asl) the trail soars to the top of the Monti Sabini, at 1250m of altitude, where we visit Cappelletta di San Francesco, an old hut where St Francis used to retreat, now incorporated in a mountain refuge. Across woods of beech- and oak-trees we go down to the Prati di Ruschio (950m) and further down to the Sanctuary of Greccio (650m). Total distance 11 Km.
  5. LISCIANO-TERMINILLO. From the village of Lisciano (altitude 590m asl) we climb along the flank of Mount Terminillo, across the woods up to Pian di Rosce (1125m) and then further up to reach Tempio di San Francesco in the mountain resort of Pian de’ Valli (1610m). Further into the mountain, we get over Moount Cardito (1650m) to reach Rifugio La Fossa (1510m). From there, we hike down Vallone dell’Acquasanta and Vallone di Lisciano to Santa Croce (725m). Distance from Lisciano: to Pian de’ Valli 7 Km; to Santa Croce 18 Km.
