Product Description

PROGRAMME from 9th to 16th may 2020

Day 1. Gathering of the participants in the hotel in Sansepolcro (or free day in Sansepolcro for those who come from Florence and continue to Assisi). Meeting with the guide, welcome aperitive and handing out of the “Pilgrim’s Kit” and “Pilgrim’s Passport”. The walk begins the following day.

Day 2. Stage 1: Sansepolcro-Le Burgne (16 Km/10 mi, medium). The walk begings through a flat stretch across the Anghiari Plane. We get to Citerna, a beautiful medieval village on the hilltop. Down and up again to get to the top of the next hill. A wonderful view over the green country rewards our efforts.

Day 3. Stage 2: Le Burgne-Città di Castello (15 Km/9.1 mi, medium). Up and down the hills on the western side of Valtiberina, we pass by the former Hermitage of Buonriposo and get down to the banks of the Tyber and to Città di Castello, the first beautiful art city of Umbria on our route.

Day 4. Stage 3: Città di Castello-Pietralunga (30 Km/18.7 mi, medium). This long though not too tough leg begins with an almost flat stretch across the countryside. We then climb into the low mountains that announce the Apennines. We get over Passo Candeggio and begin our gradual descent to the ancient village of Pieve di Saddi. Down and up the hills, across woods and country, we get to the medieval little town Pietralunga.

Day 5. Stage 4: Pietralunga-Gubbio (26 Km/16.3 mi, medium). Our way continues through the woods of Mount Spesce. Then, we walk down to the plane and finally reach Gubbio, the beautiful “stoney town” at the foot of Mount Ingino, below the Sanctuary of St. Ubaldo.

Day 6. Stage 5: Gubbio-Biscina (22 Km/13.8 mi, medium). The last two legs of our walk towards Assisi are considered as the earliest “Franciscan trail”. From the Vittorina chapel, where the famous episode of the wolf took place, we walk across the plane. We than climb into the hills that surround Valdichiascio, enjoying breath-taking views: we spot the Castle of Biscina (today’s destination) and Mount Subasio (tomorrow’s). Along the up-and-down path, we visit the chapel of Madonna delle Ripe, the Hermitage of San Pietro in Vigneto and Caprignone. We finally climb up to Biscina.

Day 7. Stage 6: Biscina-Assisi (27 Km/16.9 mi, medium). Another long but rewarding leg. Down and up over the hills, we reach the dam on River Chiascio and the historical Barcaccia Farm. A flat stretch in and out of Valfabbrica, the only town along the way, follows. We then get over on last hill and catch the first glimpses of Assisi: first its massive castle then the Basilica of St. Francis. Cross the River Tescio on an ancient bridge and climb through the “sacred woods” up to the Basilica and the pilgrim’s office “statio peregrinorum” to obtain our well-     deserved certificate (“Testimonium”).

Day 8.  Breakfast and end of the arrangements or time off in Assisi for those continuing the Way Assisi-Rieti.
